Perseverance. Diligence. The stamina to keep going. In Icelandic, elja is the quiet, unglamorous kind of persistence: not a burst of will, but the steady return to the thing you said you would do.
What Elja means to us: the accumulating evidence, in your own words, that you are becoming the person you said you would be.
We wanted a word that wasn't worn out. Most names in this space arrive carrying every app that used them before: journey, growth, mindset, journal. Elja is an Icelandic word that means perseverance, and almost nobody outside Iceland has heard it. It arrives clean, and it already means exactly the thing we're building.
It's the right kind of perseverance, too. Not grit, not hustle. The Icelandic sense is closer to diligence: showing up again, quietly, whether or not you feel like it. That is what keeping one small promise for thirty days actually is.
And it's two syllables you can say in one breath, soft at the start, open at the end, short enough to fit on a promise card. In Finland it's also a given name, a cousin of Elias. We like that it can be a person's name and a word for what a person does.
What we believe
You can't argue with a kept promise. You can argue with a mood all day. So we build around the promise.
